Chapter One :Chapter 1

"Are you certain you want to divorce me?"

Layla liam looked at the divorce agreement pushed towards her, the joy in her heart abruptly doused with cold water, chilling her to the bone.

"Mm, she's coming back."

Today was her third wedding anniversary with Adam Sawyer. She had especially gone to the market to prepare a sumptuous feast, only to be met with an unwelcome 'surprise' - a divorce agreement.

"What a delightful 'surprise'!"

"If there is anything you are not satisfied with, feel free to bring it up."

Adam sat loftily, looking down on the docile and compliant woman before him. His stance was reminiscent of a ruthless businessman conducting negotiations.

Layla lowered her head and scanned through the content on the paper. The compensation was generous, real estate property down to every inch, a villa in the city district, and an additional fifty million in cash. All in all, the total value was at least a billion.

That was more than enough for her to live a worry-free life.

A loveless, passionless marriage of three years had earned her ten billion in compensation.

By all means, she should be satisfied.

But marrying Adam was never about the money for her.

After a silent moment, Adam lit a cigarette and let it hang from his thin lips, took a deeper puff, he opened his mouth again, "If there is any dissatisfaction, feel free to speak."

Layla met his cold eyes, her voice soft as she asked, "Adam, in these three years, have you ever felt a single moment of affection for me?"

"No."

With a succinct yet definitive response, he crushed the last glimmer of hope she had harbored in her heart. In her chest, a dull ache throbbed, as if caused by a blunt knife grinding over her heart.

"So is that how it is…"

Her lashes quavered, concealing the bitterness welling up in her eyes. However, it was only for a moment, and then her face recovered its calmly gentle smile.

"I made your favourite dishes. Would you join me for a final dinner?"

Adam furrowed his brows without uttering a response.

Layla liam fought back tears as she served Adam his meal.

At that moment, Adam received a call.

"Adam, I'm in so much pain. Can you come to the hospital and stay with me, please?"

A soft female voice seeped through the phone, and as close as Layla was, she naturally heard the entire conversation.

Her fingers clenched tightly.

"Okay, stay calm. I'll be there right away. What do you want to eat? I'll bring it for you, okay?"

His voice held a warmth she had never heard before. With a melancholic look etched on Layla's face, she realized, this may be the difference between love and unlove.

Just as he was about to leave, she quickly reached out and grabbed onto his sleeve, her voice filled with a hint of humility and plea, "Adam , can you stay and finish the meal with me before you go, please?"

"Layla , don't make a scene."

With a cold detachment, he brushed off her hand and left without even looking back.

Layla clutched her aching heart. She couldn't bear it anymore and hot tears began to roll down her cheeks.

Three years ago, Adam had sought her out, asking her to marry him. Madly in love with him already, she had agreed without hesitation.

After their marriage, despite maintaining formal politeness towards each other, she had been completely satisfied being a housewife attending to all his personal needs. Even when Adam didn’t touch her, she was content.

Half a month ago, the old man passed away. After she had accompanied Adam in arranging his father’s funeral, she noticed that he was coming home less and less frequently. Until tonight when he suggested they get a divorce, because his first love, Olivia Zane, had returned.

She sat desolate and heartbroken in the living room until her entire body was stiff. Only then did she discard the cold food into the trash can, just like her shattered heart, both now part of the garbage.

After taking a shower, she lay on the cold bed where the lingering scent of Adam's woody agarwood still filled the air. She was unable to fall asleep for a long time.

"Ding——"

The ring of her cell phone broke the silence of the night.

She thought it was Adam , but when she checked, she discovered a few photos had been sent over from an unfamiliar number.

In the photos, Adam was nestled on Olivia's shoulder, his eyes tightly closed, peacefully asleep.

The message read, "Layla , Adam loves me. Clinging on is pointless for you. Don't embarrass yourself."

Layla clutched her phone, staring at the photos brimming with warmth and love, her pain immeasurable.

As the dawn broke, Adam’s assistant, Samuel Emrys, walked in holding the divorce papers. Seeing her, a pale and exhausted shadow of her former self, he took pity on her and finally spoke, "Ma'am, Mr. Sawyer asks for your signature. Any demands you might have, he is willing to fulfill."

Layla fell silent for a long time, picked up the pen handed over to her, and signed her name. She did not want any compensation from Adam , choosing instead to walk away empty-handed. When she had married Adam , it was not for money.

Samuel looked surprised, "Madam, are you not taking anything with you?"

"Correct."

She took nothing with her, only packing a few sets of clothes before leaving the marital home where she had lived for three years.

Happy at heart upon arrival, now leaving alone.

Upon leaving, she felt an emptiness in her heart, a loss of belonging. Even so, life had to go on, she couldn't toss away her life just because of Adam.

Since Adam didn't love her, being clingy was not her style.

She took out her phone, dialed a number, "Tyler Brody, I'm divorced."

Tyler arrived quickly, his car stopped beside her, kicking up a cloud of dust.

"Wise ones avoid the river of love, divorce is a wise decision."

"Less nonsense, start the car quickly."

She took out her phone, hacking into the surveillance system, erasing all traces of her whereabouts.

Finally, she glanced at the place where she had lived for three years, leaving without a trace of nostalgia.
